There are kinds of learning that cannot be arranged around a table.

A guide stops at a mark in the road. The ground holds a story.
A bird call becomes familiar because you have heard it for the third morning in a row.
An elephant moves through the trees, and everyone becomes quiet.
You return to the same landscape each day. The moon changes shape. A path becomes known. The questions deepen.

Learning From the Bush

This is the kind of education I want to make room for: learning through direct encounter, attention, relationship, movement, and enough time for a place to become part of you.

In August 2027, I am returning to South Africa with a small group for ten nights in Greater Kruger.

The bush does not arrange itself around a lesson plan. Animals move according to their own lives. A lion may sleep through the morning. A leopard may disappear before you have fully seen it. A guide may point to a track, a call, or a movement in the branches that changes how everyone looks.

That is part of the learning. We begin to understand that a living landscape is full of information, relationship, and mystery. Attention grows when there is something real to attend to.

Over ten nights, we will go out with guides at dawn and again toward evening. In all, we will enter the bush twenty times.

There will be spectacular moments. There will also be quieter ones: dust in the road, a bird call, a shadow in grass, a question that stays with you until the next day.

A Journey for Families

Sacred Schooling is interested in learning as a way of living. It is interested in raising children who can pay attention, ask real questions, stay in relationship with their bodies, and meet the living world with curiosity and care.

I will be there with my daughter, Nymue.

Parents and children who feel drawn to this journey are warmly invited to explore it. If you are considering coming with a child, read the practical details below and contact us about fit, room arrangements, and the rhythm of the retreat.

This is a shared journey in which adults and children can meet the bush together, each in their own way.

Movement as a Way of Knowing

Each day, we will gather for movement and embodiment practice. The practice draws on yoga, movement, and the Axis Syllabus, a way of studying movement through the body’s own architecture.

We will work with weight, joints, balance, rhythm, effort, and ease. We will ask what happens when a movement has more time.

Watching animals returns us to these questions. How does weight travel through an elephant’s body? What do we notice in a herd responding to a sound? How does a creature rest while remaining completely awake?

Then we return to our own bodies. This is movement as inquiry, pleasure, attention, and relationship with the body you already have.

One Place, Deep Time

This is a journey designed around staying. We will have one lodge to ourselves for all ten nights.

There is time to unpack, settle, and return. To recognize the sounds outside your room. To have a favourite place to sit. To travel the same roads often enough that the landscape begins to become familiar.

Familiarity is part of learning. When a place becomes known, it asks more of our attention. We remember where we saw the elephant. We notice that the moon has changed.

The Rhythm of the Days

We rise early and keep early nights. The bush holds our attention at first and last light. Between the drives, we eat, practise movement, rest, write, read, talk, or sit outside.
